-
Pay monthly dues, yearly membership fee and insurance
-
Attend at least 2-3 practices per week
-
Pay for upkeep of personal equipment (skates, pads, helmet, uniforms, band aids, etc)
-
Be placed on a team after Rollergirl test-up

-
Have a ton of fun and be around wonderful, supportive, and hard-core athletes
- For insurance purposes, you will be required to sign a waiver for assessments. (It's a very standard waiver and we'll have lots of copies for you to look over and sign.)
Here's what you have to do:
- Contact recruiting for more information!
- Get in shape. There are rollergirls, coaches, and recruiters at Royal Roller Rink every Monday from 7-9pm to answer any questions and help you address the basic skills needed to assess. The more you skate, the better.
- Watch roller derby. Learn about the sport, the rules, and the physical demands it might place on your body and mind.
- Talk to the Ragers and ask questions. We can tell you what it really takes. Roller girls come from all walks of life, with varying levels of experience on and off the track.
- You can get a good perspective of league life and actually see how we work by volunteering. If you are interested, please send us your information at

- Get your GEAR! Every skater will be required to wear a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, a mouth guard and quad roller skates. (Gear will be available for loan at Royal and for assessments, if needed.)
- Learn the rules!
- Assess! New skaters must be able to pass the Rookie Skills Test before skating in official league practices.
Will I be put on a team and get a derby name as soon as I try out?
Skaters who are selected to join the league will begin a training period as Fresh Meat then you can test up to join the Rookies. Once you are a Rookie, you can register a derby name and number with our league and on the Two-Evils National Registry. But remember - not everything’s in the name - your skills and abilities are of the utmost importance. Once you are ready, you can test up to become a Rollergirl which includes a skills test and a written rules test.
How much of a time commitment is required to be a skater?
Roller derby is a big commitment: it's like a job. You'll be expected to attend league practices 3x a week on-skates, and 1x a week cross-training. In addition to practices, everyone is expected to work at bouts and other official events and fundraisers. We are a skater run organization, so we also require you to work on a committee and attend meetings to remain an active member. If the time commitment is too much, maybe being a skater isn't the right fit for you at this time. There are lots of ways to stay involved: volunteer for bout set up and take down, join our awesome officiating staff, come to all our parties... the list goes on and on! Any Rager will tell you that the time is completely worth it. And you instantly have 75+ derby sisters in Anchorage and over 20,000 around the world!
Are there a lot of injuries?
We aim to prevent injuries from happening by instructing full body training and encouraging you to seek activity and exercise off track and on your own time. Injuries happen of course, but we spend a lot of time working on learning to skate safely and always require full protective gear for all skaters and refs. Although we currently do not require primary health insurance, because every skater (and ref!) are covered under WFTDA insurance, we encourage ALL skaters to have a primary form of personal insurance. We also encourage you to buy stock in those refreeze-able ice-packs; everyone of us has a few of them at home.
Transfers from other leagues (WFTDA and non-WFTDA):
- Must pass the assessments, which are held monthly.
- Helpful, but not necessary, to provide 1 letter of recommendation from the previous leagues coach
