Las Vegas, NV - The third time's the charm! RollerCon once again gets Las Vegas spinning when an estimated 4,000 skaters as well as fans and family of grassroots roller derby leagues descend to celebrate and share their favorite sport! In 2006, skaters traveled from every corner of the continental United States and Canada to attend the convention, but this year's attendees span the globe, including skaters from leagues in Alaska, England, Scotland, Germany, New Zealand, and Australia. They'll come together for 5 days of non-stop action, workshops, meetings, concerts, competitions and demonstrations - all for the love of roller derby!
2007 saw International roller derby hit and surpass the 200-league mark. These eight - wheeled women (and some men!) travel in packs - in and out of the rink - and they'll be hitting Las Vegas August 5 through August 12. Called the "fastest growing sport in the United States" by the New York Times, the exceptional women of roller derby are ready to kick up their skates together for 5 days of fun in exciting downtown Las Vegas.
This annual event is the third of its kind. Last year's RollerCon drew more than 1,000 skaters. This year's convention proudly boasts 5 days of workshops, skating and events for well over 2,000 predicted attendees, including:
- Welcome reception & Banquet
- The Black N' Blue Ball
- Workshops
- Vendor Booths
- Scrimmages
- Scavenger Hunt
- Live music at the Double Down
- The Derby Wedding
- (New this year!) Derby Divorce Court
- Las Vegas Skatepark Tour
- Fremont Street Challenges
- And much, much more!
In 2007 alone, rollergirls received intense media exposure worldwide in print (New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, Blood and Thunder, Bitch, Bust, Hustler, Menzo, Reader's Digest), television (CNN 360 with Anderson Cooper, CBS Sunday, HD Net, The Today Show, Right Guard and Aleve commercials, BBC 2, Wife Swap, PBS, Comcast Sports Net, MTV's Next, Food Network's Ace of Cakes) and radio (NPR's All Things Considered, Marketplace), as well as film.
